Dr. Yona Baguma is the Director General of the National Agricultural Research Organisation (NARO), Uganda. He holds a PhD in Molecular Biology from the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences, and both a Master’s and Bachelor’s degree in Agriculture from Makerere University.

A distinguished molecular biologist and agricultural research leader, Dr. Baguma brings over 30 years of experience in advancing agricultural science, innovation, and policy in Uganda and beyond. His scientific contributions and leadership have significantly shaped the country’s agricultural research agenda, focusing on food security, biotechnology, and value chain transformation.

Having risen through the ranks from Research Officer to Deputy Director General (Research Coordination) and now Director General, Dr. Baguma has steered NARO’s strategic direction toward research for impact, emphasizing innovation-driven agricultural transformation and climate-resilient food systems. Under his leadership, NARO has strengthened partnerships with international research institutions and promoted technologies that improve postharvest management, storage efficiency, and food safety—key priorities aligned with the theme of this conference.

Dr. Baguma has served in several national and regional leadership roles, including Chairperson of the National Biosafety Committee (NBC), Chairperson of the Makerere Regional Centre for Crop Improvement, and Board Member of ASARECA (Association for Strengthening Agricultural Research in Eastern and Central Africa). His extensive publication record and citations on Google Scholar and ResearchGate reflect his enduring commitment to scientific excellence.

Beyond his professional role, Dr. Baguma contributes to community development and educational initiatives, particularly through his support for church-based education programs that nurture youth potential and social growth.
